The National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA), in partnership with the
Department of Transportation/Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) and state & local aviation and airport authorities,
leads a new research & development program focused
on maturing technologies needed for a small aircraft transportation
system (SATS). The project's initial focus is to prove
that four new operating capabilities will enable safe
and affordable access to virtually any runway in the nation
in most weather conditions. These new operating capabilities
rely on on-board computing, advanced flight controls,
Highway in the Sky displays, and automated air traffic
separation and sequencing technologies.
As part of the NASA SATS program,
several regional SATS labs were established to conduct
the actual research needed to make the SATS system a reality.
The Southeast SATS Lab is one such regional lab that is
very active and enjoys the support of local and state
government, airports around the region, and many
aerospace companies who are helping conduct SATS research.
The Southeast SATS Lab is managed at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Our ultimate goal is to introduce
new and innovative technology into general aviation; everything
from avionics, navigation and aircraft manufacturing smart
airport technology.
We are researching a completely
new system for general aviation which will make it more
available to everyone and bring general aviation to more
communities.
